Copyright protects original works of authorship.  In contrast, patents protect inventions or discoveries, and trademarks protect words, phrases, symbols, or designs that identify the source of the goods or services.

Copyright covers literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. While copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, it may protect the way the facts, ideas, systems and methods of operation are expressed.

Copyright exists as soon as the work is fixed in a tangible medium of expression, meaning that the work is  perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.

Registration is not required for a copyright to exist,  but it is required to bring a lawsuit for infringement.  A copyright can also be recorded with the U.S. Custom and Border Protection to assist with stopping the importation or exportation of infringing works.

Contact Nancy about registering and recording your copyrighted works.
